Paintings by J Karam

Karam is a passionate and innovative painter whose work is recognized for its expressive brushwork and abstract compositions. Whether a cityscape, musician or still figurative painting, Karam's art demonstrates a celebration of the arts as they relate to life. Her curiosity about world gives a constant source of inspiration, and through her creative use of color and design, she responds to the natural design inherent in all that surrounds her. Her paintings manifest through her broad view of the world and her irrepressible passion for creating art.

Karam was born in 1968 in La Mesa, California and raised overseas moving from country to country every 2-3 years until returning to America in 1981. Living overseas during childhood broadened Karam's scope of reference and perspective from an early age, and moving frequently made her highly adaptable change. These experiences molded a character and emotional life quite vividly displayed in her work and development.

Karam created a series of abstract cityscapes in 2007, named Funkytown. In these paintings buildings skylines curve with animated twists and boast colorful palettes. In 2008 she branched out in several directions of figurative paintings with subjects varying from musicians to city bicycles to nudes.

Regardless of her subject, Karam creates paintings full of life with her expressive brushwork and keen focus on color and value. Her attention to her subjects can be realistic while her compositions lean toward abstraction.

Karam's art can often be seen as a celebration of the arts as they relate to daily life. She marvels at the design and engineering of a vintage car the same way she does a musician's gesture and expression as he belts out a tune on his saxophone, or a fashion model struts down the runway.

After graduating from the The Art Institute of Dallas in 1988, and more recently studied under Donna Finch-Adams. Karam currently lives and exhibits in Texas and is a juried artist of the Daily Painters website, and is emerging as an international artist, with collectors in the United States, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Finland.
